Types Of Burn Injuries

Burn injuries are generally classified into four categories based on their severity: first-degree burns, second-degree burns, third-degree burns and fourth-degree burns.

First-Degree Burns:
First-degree burns are the mildest form of burns you can sustain in the event of a car accident fire. They damage only the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of your skin. In most cases, suffering a first-degree burn causes your skin to become dry and red, similar to getting a sun burn. Although a first-degree burn can be quite painful, these injuries usually heal completely within 3 to 5 days.

Second-Degree Burns:
Second-degree burns are also referred to as partial thickness burns. They damage the outermost layer of your skin (epidermis) and the layer underneath (dermis), leaving your skin red, blistered, thickened and swollen. These types of injuries can be very painful and take anywhere from two to three weeks to heal. In most cases, the wounds tend to heal without scarring, so skin grafts are not required.

Third-Degree Burns:
Third-degree burns are also known as full thickness burns. They tend to burn through the epidermis and dermis and damage the underlying subcutaneous tissue. The affected area is usually black or white in color and tends to be dry with a leathery texture. Third degree burns tend to destroy your nerve endings, so you are unlikely to feel any pain or burning sensation.

Fourth-Degree Burns:
Fourth-degree burns are the most severe form of burns you can sustain in a car accident fire. They tend to burn through the epidermis and dermis and severely damage the underlying muscle fibers, tendons and bone. Fourth-degree burns are almost always fatal. If you do manage to survive, you will need multiple skin grafts and surgeries and will have to undergo an extensive rehabilitation program in order to be able to lead a fully functional life.

Treating Burn Injuries

Treatment of burn injuries vary depending on their severity and location.

Mild Burns

Mild burns are commonly treated with:

  1. Burn creams and ointments that are applied at the site of the injury to promote healing;
  2. IV fluids that are administered to prevent the risk of dehydration and organ failure;
  3. Dressings such as dry gauze which help prevent the risk of infections and promote healing;
  4. Prescription medications or morphine to help alleviate pain; and
  5. IV antibiotics to ward off infection.

Severe Burns

If you sustain burn injuries on your face or neck, your throat could swell shut, rendering you unable to breathe normally. In such cases, a tube is inserted into your trachea (windpipe) to ensure adequate oxygen supply to your lungs.

If you are unable to eat, you will be fed through a feeding tube, which is inserted into your nose and connects to your stomach.

Third degree burn injuries often require skin grafts. A graft is a procedure where the scar tissue at the site of the injury is replaced with healthy skin from a different part of your body.

In case of burn injuries that result in extensive scarring and disfigurement, the doctor might recommend cosmetic surgery to enhance your appearance.
