The Esophagus And Cancer

Esophageal cancer refers to the mutation of the cells in the esophagus. The esophagus is one component of the gastrointestinal tract. It is similar to the windpipe, but instead of moving air to the lungs, the purpose of the esophagus is to convey food from the mouth to the stomach via a process known as peristalsis. Peristalsis is the contraction and release of the muscles of the esophagus, a rippling motion that encourages food to move through the body.

When the esophagus fails to function correctly, eating can become difficult or uncomfortable. Minor issues with the esophagus might include heartburn or acid reflux. In instances of esophageal cancer, symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for less severe issues. Some of these symptoms include coughing, difficulty swallowing, pain in the chest, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, and blood in the stool from esophageal bleeding. Unfortunately, esophageal cancer does not always present symptoms early on, which is why it is important to be aware of any irregularities or feelings of discomfort. It is better to check with a medical professional and be certain that symptoms are nothing serious than to let cancer go undiagnosed.

Types Of Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer Esophageal cancer is often one of two types. It can be either squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma, depending upon the location and type of cell that cancer develops in. The esophagus is comprised of layers of cells, tissue, and muscle. The inner lining of the esophagus, known as the mucosa, is lined with squamous cells.

Squamous cells are present throughout the entire human body and allow for the diffusion of molecules. It is in this layer of squamous cells that esophageal cancer most commonly begins, in either the neck or the upper region of the esophagus. From the mucosa, squamous cell carcinoma cancer can spread to the outermost layers of the esophagus and then to other parts of the body. Adenocarcinoma cancer, by contrast, begins in the lower region of the esophagus. The gland cells are responsible for making the mucus that lubricates the esophagus mutate and become cancerous.

Risk Factors For Esophageal Cancer

Anyone can potentially develop esophageal cancer. The presence of certain risk factors can, however, increase an individual’s chances that cancer will take root in the body. These risk factors include:

  1. Genetic Factors: Age, gender, and medical history of cancer are all factors in the chances that cancer will develop in the body. Esophageal cancer typically affects men over the age of 55. It is less common in the young and in women;
  2. Life-Style: Weight, diet, physical activity, and recreational habits play an important role in the development of cancer in the body. Individuals who are overweight, who eat a diet high in fatty foods and red meat, and who do not exercise are at risk, as are those who smoke and drink alcohol; and
  3. Medical Complications: Pre-existing medical conditions related to the stomach and esophagus might lead to esophageal cancer. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, is one such condition, as is Barrett’s esophagus.

The best way to prevent the development of esophageal cancer or other cancers is to take care of the body. Eating a healthy diet that avoids red meats and foods high in fat is recommended, as is staying active through regular exercise. Limiting alcohol consumption and eliminating tobacco use is a recommendation for avoiding all types of cancers, but particularly esophageal cancer, which is damaged by long-term tobacco use. It is also recommended that individuals with GERD or Barrett’s esophagus seek out medical treatment for their conditions.
