In a recent study done by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, scientists examined 75 individuals who had been diagnosed with mesothelioma and exposed to talcum powder. Importantly, the individuals’ occupations did not expose them to other sources of asbestos. Each individual was deposed on their talcum powder usage and any other possible asbestos exposure, including occupation and para-occupation (take-home) exposure. For each of the 75 patients, their only known source of asbestos exposure was through cosmetic talcum powder usage. Ultimately, eleven patients were able to be medically examined and their tissues samples were extracted.

The tissues from the patients were examined by a board-certified pathologist, a doctor who studies the causes, nature and effects of disease. It was determined that the asbestos fiber types found in the tissues of the patients examined were the same as the asbestos fiber types found in cosmetic talcum products. Essentially, the asbestos from the talcum powder was found in the patients’ tissues. This research shows the danger of continuous exposure and usage of talcum powder.

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is aware of the issue and is pursuing further investigations.

The FDA conducted a year-long investigation into contaminated cosmetic talcum powder products in 2019 and released the results in March 2020. The results showed that the FDA tested 43 talcum powder product samples and found that 9 out of 43 tested positive for asbestos. The World Health Organization states that there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos fibers. The fibers are very difficult for the human body to break down and can lead to the deadly cancer, mesothelioma. The FDA will continue to test talcum powder products throughout 2020. The results are scheduled to be released in 2021.
