You should not have to question the safety of over-the-counter supplements that almost anyone can buy, but a growing body of evidence suggests that common products like kratom and 7-OH are not nearly as effective or risk-free as manufacturers are willing to admit.

Kratom, for instance, can be purchased almost anywhere, even at gas stations. Harvested from the leaves of a tropical evergreen tree found only in Southeast Asia, kratom is sold as an energy booster, mood enhancer, and pain reliever; some people also use it as an affordable remedy for opioid withdrawal. Kratom’s active ingredients include 7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH. Part of the reason that kratom is supposed to help ease withdrawals is that it mimics some of the effects of actual opioids, activating many of the same receptors in the brain.
Kratom naturally contains a small amount of 7-OH, but some manufacturers add more, potentially to leave customers hooked. Other companies have even been caught adding 7-OH to supplements that should not have it. In December 2025, for instance, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration seized tens of thousands of units of highly concentrated 7-OH from three Missouri businesses. In a press release, officials noted that, under current regulations, 7-OH “cannot be lawfully added to dietary supplements or conventional foods.”
“The rise in the use of concentrated 7-OH as an illegal ingredient in foods and dietary supplements is of particular concern to the FDA,” an official said in a 2025 press release.
At high doses or with extended use, 7-OH can cause symptoms including nausea, vomiting, elevated heart rate, seizures, and difficulty breathing. In some cases, it can interact with other medications, potentially triggering life-threatening complications. Most medical experts now believe that substances like kratom hurt much more than they help. Despite this growing consensus, many manufacturers and retailers continue to advertise kratom and 7-OH as safe supplements that provide risk-free relief.
Nobody can make the right call when they are given the wrong information.

The Risks of Kratom and 7-OH Supplements
Kratom is often advertised as a natural supplement with powerful properties, but health officials and actual doctors are skeptical of the underlying science. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has repeatedly warned people not to use kratom to treat any medical condition. This is because kratom, along with other 7-OH-containing compounds, provides few health benefits while increasing your overall risk for a wide range of serious medical conditions.
Some of the most common side effects of kratom use include:
- Dry mouth;
- Weight loss;
- Constipation;
- Liver damage;
- Muscle pain; and
- High blood pressure.
Kratom can also damage the nervous system. It can sometimes cause:
- Dizziness;
- Drowsiness;
- Auditory, visual, and/or olfactory hallucinations;
- Delusions;
- Depression;
- Trouble breathing; and
- Confusion.

Over longer periods of time, kratom can lead to serious, irreversible, and potentially life-threatening illnesses of the kidneys, liver, heart, and brain. A small number of regular kratom users have died from complications; many more have been hospitalized. Some lawsuits even describe patients being forced onto dialysis or into long-term care.
The Case Against the Kratom IndustryKratom is marketed as a safe and natural supplement, but it is not regulated by the federal government. In fact, most experts believe that it has almost no medical value.
Every kratom lawsuit and 7-OH claim is different, but most accuse the kratom industry of:
- Failing to warn consumers about kratom’s health risks;
- Marketing kratom and 7-OH products as natural or safe despite the well-documented danger;
- Selling products that contain higher-than-expected concentrations of 7-OH or other potentially problematic compounds;
- Failing to provide dosage instructions or guidelines; and
- Continuing to sell kratom and 7-OH products even after receiving multiple reports of death, serious injury, and other adverse reactions.
Anyone who has suffered a serious and adverse health event caused by kratom could be entitled to take legal action. You could have standing to sue if all of the following are true:
- You have used kratom or another 7-OH-containing supplement, pill, powder, tablet, or extract;
- You experienced serious complications or side effects as the result of taking kratom; and
- Your injuries caused you to sustain compensable damages.
In the legal field, the term “damages” is used to describe different kinds of loss, hardship, and suffering. Your damages could include compensation for any one or more of the following:
- Your hospital bills;
- The costs of future care;
- Lost income from work;
- Emotional pain and suffering;
- Physical pain and suffering;
- Loss of enjoyment; and
- Wrongful death.
As a general rule, you can only sue if you have sustained damages. Of course, this does not mean that obtaining compensation is the only reason to sue. While a lawsuit could help restore your financial independence, it could serve another purpose: holding the kratom industry accountable for its unfathomable negligence.

Kratom manufacturers and retailers are not pharmaceutical companies, but they are no strangers to high-stakes litigation. Scientists and health regulators have been sounding the alarm on kratom for years. Part of the reason the industry still exists is that it is willing to do whatever it takes to protect its profits. This often means that the defendant in a kratom lawsuit would not settle, and if they do, it could be for much less money than you deserve. Instead, they will count on keeping you wrapped up in court, burying you with motions, demands, and petitions they know you would not have time to handle.
