How Does The Tongue Get Injured?

Tongue injuries can take many forms and have many causes. They are frequently seen in children, who are more prone to falls or crashes than adults, but tongue injuries seen in adults are more likely to be serious in nature. Some of the most common causes of tongue injuries are:

  1. Sports: During sports, particularly high contact sports such as football or karate, there is a greater likelihood for accidental trauma to the face;
  2. Piercings: New or old piercings can lead to infection if the area is not cleaned properly or if the piercing is in some way incorrectly done;
  3. Dental Surgery: After dental surgery, when a patient is still under the effects of a local anesthetic, it is not uncommon for the patient to accidentally bite their tongue or cheeks;
  4. Trauma: A crash on a bicycle, in a car, from a slip and fall, or similar trauma can cause accidental tongue bites; and
  5. Seizures: A common danger of seizures is damage to the tongue.

Diagnosing a Tongue Injury

It can be hard to know when a tongue injury is serious enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room. Because the mouth is full of blood vessels, tongue wounds bleed a lot, even when an injury is minor. A lot of blood is not necessarily an indication that a wound is severe, but sometimes even a minor wound can become serious if it is not kept clean. It is recommended that medical attention should be sought if a tongue injury continues to bleed or if bleeding suddenly starts again. The presence of heat in the area, red or swollen tissue, or yellow discharge, are common indications of infection. Pain or fever are also warning signs that the body is fighting off an infection, in which case medical attention should immediately be sought.

In the case of a tongue piercing, an infection may develop in the area if it is not kept clean. During the first few weeks after a piercing it is common for the area to be swollen and red, as it is a healing wound. It is recommended to clean the piercing frequently with a saline solution and monitor the area for signs of infection. If symptoms do not improve after a few days, it is recommended to seek out medical attention. An accident can be a negatively life-altering experience. Treatments

A minor tongue-related injury can be treated at home. First, rinse with water in order to see the injury and determine whether it is severe enough to visit the emergency. Using a piece of gauze or cloth, light pressure can be applied to the wound to help stop bleeding. Sometimes an icepack can help to reduce swelling and alleviate pain. Once the bleeding has stopped, continue to monitor the injury for signs of infection. Tongue-related injuries can take a few days to heal.

A severe wound to the tongue will require medical attention. Injuries that result in a gaping wound, pain, or the inability to swallow or speak are not likely to heal correctly on their own. These injuries will probably require stitches. If part of the tongue was bitten off, a plastic surgeon might be needed to reattach the muscle. Severe tongue wounds can take weeks, or even months, to fully heal. During that time, an individual should take any medications or antibiotics prescribed by their doctor. Avoid hard or crunchy foods that might tear open a healing wound, and keep the mouth clean by ringing with salt water, a saline solution, and brushing and flossing.

If a tongue injury has led to a permanent change of life, a debilitation, or loss of livelihood, you may be eligible for legal compensation.
