Obtaining Your Motorcycle Learner’s Permit in New York State

Riding a motorcycle requires a motorcycle license as well as observance of New York State motorcycle laws. New riders should never assume that they know the rules of the road before they get on a motorcycle for the first time. The minimum age to get a junior license (Class MJ) is 16 years old and 17 years old to get a standard motorcycle license for those that have taken driver’s education.

Riders are required to pass a written exam at a DMV testing center. The written exam to obtain a learner’s permit is based on the NY DMV Motorcycle Manual (Form MV-21 MC). The rider’s manual encompasses everything from motorcycle safety courses to braking and shifting gears. Riders taking the written exam can ensure that they are ready by first taking an online practice exam.

After passing the written test, you will be issued a learner’s permit, which comes with restrictions. Riders with learner’s permits are required to be observed by a rider with a valid motorcycle license. The learning rider has to be visible to and within a quarter of a mile of overseeing rider every time he or she rides. The DMV has recommended motorcyclists with learner’s permits to get at least 30 hours of practice, with 10 of those hours in moderate to heavy traffic.

Getting Your Motorcycle License in New York State

For those riders that do not already possess any kind of standard New York State driver’s license, they will need to enroll in a Driver Education or pre-licensing course before scheduling a road test. If a rider already has another New York State driver’s license, they do not need to take a pre-licensing course to schedule a road test.

After passing the road test, motorcyclists receive their official motorcycle licenses, which are valid for 8 years.

Riders that already have valid driver's license and a motorcycle learner’s permit, are eligible to be exempt from the road test if they complete a motorcycle training course provided by a trainer certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
