Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a destructive disease characterized by the obliteration of red blood cells, blood platelets and kidney failure. Researchers and other medical professionals believe that anomalous inflammatory reaction causes platelets in the bloodstream to sludge capillaries and form blood clots for no apparent reason. In return, the platelets become depleted, which results in a shortage in components of the blood that can form clots throughout the body. Hemolytic uremic syndrome is also thought to be related to other ailments triggered by a similar normal clotting action inside the capillaries called thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). However, the actual cause of HUS has yet to be scientifically proven. The anomalous reaction may be due to chemicals generated in blood plasma that has not been identified yet.

Common Causes Of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome

The events that are known to trigger Hemolytic uremic syndrome are wide-ranging and can include:

  1. Escherichia coli: E. coli is a type of bacteria that is ordinarily present inside the intestines of healthy humans and is frequently found in the guts of certain animals. HUS is only caused by certain strains of E. coli, usually O157:H7 and also O104:H4. These strains of the bacteria are typically found in undercooked meat, contaminated food and soiled water. E. coli bacteria is responsible for roughly 90% of HUS cases in children.
  2. Pregnancy: HUS is commonly associated with pregnancy, early postpartum and even the use of birth control pills.
  3. Medications: Taking some immunosuppression and chemotherapy drugs, as well as the anti-platelet drugs ticlopidine and quinine have been linked to some HUS instances.
  4. Pneumonia: The bacteria Streptococcus pneumonia, which causes pneumonia is usually treated as an outpatient with antibiotics. While HUS is a rare complication of this widespread infection, it is linked to approximately 40% of all atypical HUS cases.
  5. AIDS: HUS may be connected to some cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome can be classified as “typical” or “atypical.” The diarrheal form is the only kind of typical HUS. The diarrheal form is caused by E. coli and is usually found in babies and children under 3 years old. All the other above triggers are classified as atypical HUS. Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome also includes any genetic mutations that may cause HUS through their influence on blood clotting mechanisms.

We are determined, disciplined and dedicated to obtaining the best possible result for victims suffering from HUS throughout the United States. Victims suffering from HUS may be able to pursue recovery for damages through a personal injury claim, which may include compensation for:

  2. Past and future pain and suffering (both physical and mental) caused by HUS, or related health conditions, as well as treatment and recovery;
  3. Lost wages from missed work due to HUS illness, hospitalization or treatment;
  4. Diminished future earning capacity;
  5. Loss of consortium;

If you lost a loved one due to HUS, nothing can truly erase the pain of your loss. However, you may have the right to file a wrongful death claim.
