One common type of foodborne illness is listeria (or listeriosis). Beyond the discomfort of food poisoning symptoms, listeria ingestion can also lead to hospitalization or even death. It is the responsibility of all those involved in food production and food preparation to take all reasonable measures to prevent food from becoming contaminated.

What Is Listeria?

The CDC defines listeria as “a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.” The CDC estimates 1,600 people suffer from listeria infection each year, and 260 of those people die.

Listeria has many mild symptoms, and these symptoms include:

  1. Fever;
  2. Vomiting;
  3. Diarrhea; and
  4. Stomachache.

These are the least severe symptoms of listeria, and they are common food poisoning symptoms. In many of these cases, it is likely that the illness will not be severe enough for someone to seek medical treatment. Because of this, it is unlikely that minor cases of listeria will be diagnosed. While people tend to recover from these symptoms, any food poisoning illness can result in the following:

  1. Dehydration; and
  2. Dizziness and disorientation.

In the worst cases, the dehydration from food poisoning can have long term health impacts or lead to death.

If someone you love does not recover from apparent food poisoning or seems to be suffering from dehydration, it may be necessary to seek emergency medical treatment. If you are concerned, contact a primary care physician or urgent care center for guidance.

If the listeria moves outside of the gut, it is called invasive listeriosis, and it can be very serious. Pregnant women, the elderly and those with poor health are at a higher risk of complications from invasive listeriosis.

Invasive listeriosis in pregnant women has symptoms such as headache, fever, fatigue and muscle aches. Though these symptoms may seem minor and typical of the common flu, invasive listeriosis can lead to serious complications with pregnancy, including miscarriage.

In people who are not pregnant, invasive listeriosis can cause the following symptoms:

  1. Fever;
  2. Muscle aches;
  3. Headache;
  4. Stiff neck;
  5. Confusion;
  6. Loss of balance; and
  7. Convulsions.

Invasive listeriosis can be deadly. In most cases, the CDC says symptoms of invasive listeriosis manifest 1 to 4 weeks after eating a contaminated food item. If you are experiencing these symptoms, particularly if you are pregnant, please contact your doctor for guidance.

If you, or someone you love, suffered a serious health emergency as a result of a listeria infection, you may be entitled to compensation. If the listeria infection resulted from the consumption of mishandled food, the person or companies responsible should be held accountable. How Do You Get Listeria?

Listeria illness results from consumption of food with the listeria bacteria present. The CDC has traced listeria outbreaks to these common foods:

  1. Soft cheeses, like feta, queso fresco or brie, made with unpasteurized milk;
  2. Raw bean sprouts;
  3. Melons;
  4. Luncheon meat or cold cuts;
  5. Smoked fish, like lox; and
  6. Unpasteurized or raw milk.

Pregnant women are advised not to eat soft cheese or uncooked fish products and to ensure they consume appropriately pasteurized milk and well-cooked meat products.

Listeria ingestion can be prevented by reading labels carefully on soft cheeses, keeping luncheon meat refrigerated, fully cooking bean sprouts and ensuring that melons are not kept cut open in the fridge for more than a few days. With each of these foods, careful behavior can prevent contamination.
