The Cybertruck is one of the most recognizable vehicles on the road.

Tesla Cybertruck Electronic Door Lawsuit Since it was first introduced, the Cybertruck has been incredibly polarizing. It has been loved, hated, and even turned into something of a political symbol. However, over the course of the past several years, regulators have started to highlight concerns of much more practical importance. A series of investigations now suggests that the Cybertruck’s electronic systems can sometimes experience catastrophic failure, trapping drivers inside and leaving them without any apparent means of escape.

Although the Cybertruck does have wire-release switches that can help open the doors in the event of a system failure, many motorists simply do not know where these levers are located. Even if they do, activating them is a multi-step process that leaves more than enough room for error. In a worst-case scenario, this can leave drivers unable to exit a vehicle that has caught fire or has otherwise been critically compromised.

Tesla has long avoided liability for many of its most contentious design features, but more and more families have started to fight back, filing personal injury lawsuits and wrongful death claims in courts across the country.

The Case Against Tesla: 3 Accidents That Show How The Cybertruck’s Electronic Doors Could Come At The Cost Of Safety 1. The Piedmont Crash

The parents of two college students who died in a crash near Piedmont, California, recently announced that they have filed wrongful death claims against Tesla.

Tesla Cybertruck Electronic Door Lawsuit The crash occurred on the night of November 27, 2024, just outside of San Francisco. Four college students were inside a Cybertruck when it collided with a tree. According to an eyewitness, a friend of the students who was driving another vehicle, the Tesla quickly caught fire, trapping all of its occupants inside. The fire caused the Cybertruck’s electronic doors to malfunction. Unfamiliar with Tesla’s hidden wire-release latches, three of the four students died from smoking inhalation and thermal injuries.

Attorneys for the crash’s only survivor, who is also suing Tesla, described how the eyewitness repeatedly tried to save his friends:

"He reached for the doors. There were no handles. He pressed the electronic buttons. Nothing happened. He grabbed a tree branch and swung it at the window again and again, but the reinforced glass held," lawyers for the sole survivor said in a prepared statement.

2. The Baytown Blaze

In Baytown, Texas, sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene of a nighttime crash only to find a massive conflagration barely visible through heavy smoke. Officers tried to approach the vehicle, but were unable to get too close due to the intensity of the flames.

Fire extinguishers had no effect. Even after the fire department arrived, first responders struggled to control the blaze, which was reignited by the truck’s batteries.

Once the fire was finally under control, deputies discovered human remains in the front seat.

“He burned to death at 5,000°F, a fire so hot his bones experienced thermal fracture,” attorneys wrote in court documents. “The crash forces themselves were survivable,” but a defective electronic door allegedly prevented the victim from escaping the blaze.

3. A High-Risk Rescue in Los Angeles

In April 2025, Los Angeles firefighters responded to reports of a fire in a residential neighborhood. When they arrived, they found a heavily damaged Cybertruck engulfed in flames, despite being showered by a fire hydrant that was spraying water more than 50 feet into the air.

The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old “All-American” basketball star who played for the University of Southern California, was found lying in the road. He later said that he had been driving home from the gym when his steering wheel became unresponsive. Unable to control the vehicle, he crashed into a fire hydrant and then a tree. The vehicle allegedly caught fire upon impact.

“I woke up in the car after about three minutes,” he said in a press conference. “I had heard cracking noises like I was at a campfire.”

The victim, Alijah Arenas, could not open his door and was forced to kick out the window. He partially succeeded, but had to be pulled out of the vehicle, legs first, by passersby.

As part of its own investigation into Cybertruck-related accidents, The Guardian noted that, in all the crashes it reviewed, the resulting “fires … burned with severe intensity.”

The High Standard Of Evidence In A Cybertruck Defective Door Lawsuit

Tesla is no stranger to controversy or litigation.

If you were injured in a Cybertruck accident or fire that was not your fault, you could have standing to sue. However, you cannot expect that filing a lawsuit will be nearly as easy as winning one. In case after case, Tesla has resisted attempts to hold it liable by claiming that accident victims misused its systems, misunderstood its technology, and are responsible for their own injuries.

Under most circumstances, winning a personal injury lawsuit or wrongful death claim against a company like Tesla will require:

  1. Proving that your Cybertruck was in some way defective;
  2. Establishing that a defect, such as a faulty electronic door system, caused your accident;
  3. Obtaining evidence to show that the defect was the direct cause of your injuries; and
  4. Submitting a plea for actual accident- and injury-related damages.

Companies like Tesla have immense resources at their disposal, including veritable armies of lawyers who do nothing but defend their employer from claims like yours.

Even if you have dash-cam footage and eyewitness testimony, proving that a defect caused your accident often involves being able to inspect and analyze system features that are invisible to most drivers. This may mean requisitioning evidence in possession of the police or sending legal demands to Tesla for technical information. Beyond that, you may have to conduct a forensic investigation or consult an expert witness, somebody who has years of experience in the automotive industry and the professional expertise to ascertain exactly where, why, how, and when your Cybertruck’s safety features fell short.

Without exacting evidence, your legal arguments could well be turned to piecemeal by an aggressive defense that will almost always prioritize Tesla’s profits over your financial well-being.
