According to Tesla’s corporate logic, drivers should know better than to trust Autopilot. In August 2025, a federal jury in Florida found Tesla partly liable for a 2019 accident involving Autopilot. Tesla was ordered to pay more than $243 million in damages to the family of 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon, who was killed near Key Largo after the driver of a Tesla Model S sped through an intersection at 62 miles per hour.

The driver of the Tesla was later identified as George McGree. According to court documents, McGee had Autopilot enabled at the time of the accident. He was also allegedly distracted, having dropped his cellphone somewhere inside the vehicle. Tesla tried leveraging this to its advantage, telling the court that McGee’s negligence was the sole cause of the crash.

The jury disagreed, determining that Tesla was 33% liable for the family’s damages. Tesla tried to appeal the verdict, but its bid was rejected by a federal judge in February 2026. In her decision, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom found that the evidence presented at trial “more than supports” the jury’s original $243 million award.
