Depo-Provera is a type of hormonal contraceptive. It is administered as an injection every three to four months. Depo-Provera prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation and stimulating the production of cervical mucus, which helps form an additional barrier to sperm.

Every standard dose of Depo-Provera contains about 150 milligrams of progestin, a laboratory-made hormone. Progestin is one of several synthetic hormones now believed to promote the formation of meningioma, a type of tumor that grows in the three layers of membranes around the brain.

A meningioma is a tumor that grows in the meninges, a series of membranes that protect both the brain and the spinal cord. Most meningiomas are benign, meaning that they are not cancerous; an estimated 1% to 10% of all meningiomas are categorized as malignant.

However, just because a meningioma is not cancerous does not mean that it cannot be dangerous.

Meningiomas can vary in size and grow larger over time. If a meningioma gets big enough, it can start putting pressure on nearby brain tissue, nerves, and blood vessels. This can cause pain and discomfort as well as serious and potentially life-altering neurological issues.

Meningiomas grow slowly and can take many years to form.

Unlike common illnesses, like a cold or the flu, meningiomas can also take an incredibly long time to become symptomatic. In the earliest stages of growth, a meningioma may not affect your health in the slightest. As it grows larger, you might begin to notice symptoms. Many of these symptoms may not seem serious, but you might start having regular headaches or feel dizzy and light-headed at odd times.
