1. In Northern Virginia, an off-duty firefighter was forced to shatter a Tesla Model Y’s window with his bare hands to extricate a trapped couple. By the time the door had been forced open, one of the survivors had suffered serious burns and permanent smoke inhalation injuries.

Bloomberg’s investigation notes that Tesla’s earliest vehicles were designed with an intentionally flattened exterior surface. By reducing curves, Tesla benefits from improved aerodynamics. However, this design feature also leaves less room for commonplace components like window switches and door handles. Tesla’s engineers tried to compensate by introducing a wire-release mechanism that can open the doors in the event of a life-threatening emergency. The same feature was carried over to the more modern Cybertruck.

Every Tesla currently on the market, including the Cybertruck, contains the same kinds of wire-release switches and levers. These switches can be difficult to find. The driver-side lever, for instance, is located near the window switch; in the back seat, passengers must perform a complex series of steps, one of which necessitates locating a hidden pocket and removing its liner, to trigger the emergency release.
