Tesla’s Cybertruck was designed to look, feel, and drive like something from the future. However, the Cybertruck’s distinctive appearance could conceal a number of hidden flaws, some of which could prove life-threatening in the event of an accident. Over the course of the past several years, regulators and personal injury attorneys have found strong evidence to suggest that some of the Cybertruck’s most distinctive features are prone to sudden failure when safety matters most.
In an alarming recent incident, a group of college students driving a Cybertruck near San Francisco crashed into a tree. One of their friends, who was in a vehicle behind them, saw the accident unfold. They did everything they could to help, but found themselves unable to open the Cybertruck’s door.
By the time that the students’ friend managed to shatter the windows, three of the Cybertruck’s four occupants had died from smoke inhalation and burn injuries.
“He reached for the doors. There were no handles. He pressed the electronic buttons. Nothing happened. He grabbed a tree branch and swung it at the window again and again, but the reinforced glass said,” lawyers for the crash’s sole survivor said in a statement.
This was not an accident without precedent. Tesla’s design features have been implicated in dozens of other crashes. Outside of Boston, a 20-year-old man driving a Tesla Model Y survived an initial accident, only to be smothered by smoke and scorched by out-of-control flames. He passed away before first responders could open the doors. Similar scenes have played out in different states, from California to New York.
Drivers who do everything right should not have to worry about their own vehicle turning against them. If you or a loved one has been seriously injured due to a Cybertruck electronic door failure, you could be entitled to significant compensation. Although no amount of money can make up for a life-altering accident, a successful settlement or court-ordered award could help you reclaim your financial independence and, potentially, help hold Tesla accountable for selling a defective product that may not have been safe to use under even ideal conditions.

3 Big Dangers Of Tesla’s Electronic Door SystemEvery car sold in the United States is required to undergo safety testing, but that does not mean that engineers always get their priorities straight. According to an investigation conducted by Bloomberg, Tesla has long prioritized crash survivability at the expense of other factors. This means that, while the Tesla Cybertruck may be able to withstand the impact of a high-speed crash, comparatively little thought was given to how easy it would be for survivors to escape afterward.
Regulators have identified all three of the following as points of potential failure in a Cybertruck:
- Electronic Door Failure
Tesla’s Cybertruck does not have conventional door handles.
Instead, the Cybertruck is equipped with electronic switches. This is a side-effect of Tesla’s design decisions. Most new Tesla vehicles, including the Cybertruck, lack noticeable curves and utilize a flat profile to reduce drag and improve aerodynamics.
In the case of a collision or fire, the electronic system used to open the Cybertruck’s doors can fail, making it difficult or impossible for occupants to quickly escape the vehicle.
- Hidden Wire-Release Levers
The Cybertruck does have a fail-safe for its electronic door system.
In the absence of any external or internal handles, the Cybertruck employs a wire-release mechanism, which resembles a small switch or lever. The lever itself can be difficult to find. In the Cybertruck, the driver-side release is located behind the window switches. Passengers sitting in the rear of the vehicle must find a hidden compartment and remove its lining before being able to access the lever.
Safety regulators and personal injury lawyers note that people who are not intimately familiar with the Cybertruck’s layout, particularly drivers who are renting the vehicle, or who are borrowing a friend or family member’s car, may not be able to find these hidden switches fast enough to avoid injury, or worse.
- Lack of External Door Handles
The Cybertruck does not have handles on its exterior.

Under ideal operating conditions, the Cybertruck can be opened by pressing an electronic switch; it is also designed to automatically open through Bluetooth when its owner approaches the vehicle.
In a collision, though, the absence of any external handles can prove extraordinarily problematic. The eyewitness to the Bay Area crash in San Francisco claims they were initially unable to break the Cybertruck’s window to save their friends, despite using a tree branch to repeatedly strike the glass. In another incident, a woman in Northern Virginia sustained permanent, disfiguring injuries because neither she nor emergency personnel could shatter the window of her Tesla Model Y before firefighters arrived with a hydraulic cutter.

Under state and federal law, car-makers have a legal responsibility to ensure that the products they sell are reasonably safe for their intended use. This does not just mean that manufacturers are obliged to make automobiles that can handle everyday traffic; it means they also have to anticipate how their vehicles will work before, during, and immediately after a crash.

- Your Tesla Cybertruck’s electronic door system failed during or immediately after the crash;
- The electronic door system failure was a direct cause of your injuries;
