In a recent warning, the federal Food and Drug Administration said that breast mesh-type products could pose a serious risk to women. Even though “surgical mesh products are cleared for the repair and reinforcement of soft [breast] tissue where weakness exists,” the overall “safety and effectiveness of surgical mesh in breast surgery” is comparatively ambiguous.

7. FlexHD, a biologic breast mesh manufactured by MTF Biologics.

Researchers believe that up to 80% of all women who undergo breast surgery also receive breast meshes. Of the above brands, GalaFLEX,, DuraSorb, FlexHD, and Alloderm are among the most commonly used in cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery.

A breast mesh is a type of internal bra that uses a scaffolding technique to support your natural breast tissue during and after a surgical procedure. Most breast mesh products fall into one of the following categories:

A biologic breast mesh is made from natural tissue. This tissue is typically taken from an animal or a human cadaver. During processing, the donated tissue is stripped of certain cells, leaving behind a layer of collagen that can be used as a scaffold for existing tissue. Most biologic meshes are designed to be absorbed by the body, leaving nothing behind.

A synthetic breast mesh is made from non-natural materials, which could include plastics or other polymers.
