New York is a city where image, appearance, and perception can make a big difference.

Ozempic

Over the course of the past decade, a relatively new class of medication has exploded in popularity. Called GLP-1 agonists, these drugs were once primarily used to treat diabetes. In recent years, they have found a new use: weight loss.

According to some reports, more than 15 million Americans have taken a GLP-1 agonist at least once. GLP-1 agonists work by regulating insulin secretion, and they include popular brands like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. In most cases, these medications present relatively little risk, with the most frequently reported side effects including conditions as minor as nausea or an upset stomach.

However, emerging research suggests that GLP-1 agonists can carry other risks, up to and including that of cancer. Perhaps more worryingly, some of these risks are poorly documented and have gone largely unrecognized, leaving patients without the means to make an informed decision about their health and well-being.

New York, New York Ozempic Lawsuit

If you have been injured by Ozempic or another weight loss drug, you should not have to pay the price for a complication you never knew could have been caused by a GLP-1 agonist. Under state and federal law, drug-makers have a binding duty to identify and investigate potential side effects. If a company ignored the evidence to protect its profits, it could be held liable for the costs of your injury.

The Science Behind GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs

GLP-1 agonists have been on the market since at least 2005.

Different types of GLP-1 agonists can affect the body in different ways, but they all rely on the same basic mechanism. If you take a GLP-1 agonist like Ozempic or Wegovy, it changes the way that your body responds to a meal. These drugs can have a significant impact on:

  1. Your appetite;
  2. The way that your body digests food; and
  3. Your blood sugar levels.

Ozempic, the most-frequently prescribed GLP-1 agonist in the United States, was originally designed to help fight diabetes. During or after eating, Ozempic regulates the release of insulin, preventing blood sugar levels from spiking. Unlike conventional insulin injections, GLP-1 agonists have the benefit of lowering your risk of hypoglycemia, a life-threatening condition caused by abnormally low blood sugar. These drugs can also reduce glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels when they fall too low.

GLP-1 Receptor

Scientists have long recognized that GLP-1’s ability to suppress appetite could prove beneficial to patients hoping to lose weight. In 2021, the federal Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Wegovy for weight loss. Wegovy is made by Novo Nordisk, the same company that manufactures Ozempic, and has become a staple of weight-loss regimens and medical obesity treatments nationwide.

The Most Common NYC Weight Loss Drugs

Ozempic and Wegovy were two of the first GLP-1 agonists to be explicitly approved for weight loss, but they are not the only options around. In New York City, hospitals and clinics prescribe a fairly wide range of other GLP-1 drugs for the treatment of both diabetes and obesity.

These medications include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Zepbound;
  2. Mounjaro;
  3. Victoza;
  4. Trulicity; and
  5. Saxenda.

GLP-1 agonists are generally regarded as safe drugs, but, like most medications, they carry a risk of certain side effects. Most of these side effects are neither life-threatening nor especially dangerous. However, a growing body of evidence now indicates that pharmaceutical companies may have downplayed or outright ignored a host of other medical risks, some of which can trigger conditions that are truly life-threatening.

The Hidden Risks Of Ozempic

The most common side effects associated with GLP-1 agonists are relatively tame. These include:

  1. Loss of appetite;
  2. Nausea;
  3. Vomiting; and
  4. Diarrhea.

Pharmaceutical companies like Novo Nordisk have also recognized that GLP-1 drugs are associated with more serious side effects like pancreatitis, thyroid cancer, and kidney injuries.

These kinds of complications are relatively rare but well-documented. However, recent evidence suggests that the pharmaceutical industry may have overlooked or, potentially, outright ignored a fairly wide range of conditions that researchers believe are likely associated with weight loss drugs.

If you have taken a GLP-1 agonist for weight loss, you could be at risk for:

  1. Abdominal distension;
  2. Gastroenteritis;
  3. Gastroparesis;
  4. Gallbladder disease;
  5. Intestinal blockages; and
  6. Decreased vision, or loss of vision.

Ozempic and Wegovy could also cause hair loss and psychiatric problems. It is also possible that other conditions, including conditions not on this list, could be caused or exacerbated by the use of common GLP-1 agonist medications.

Compensation In An Ozempic Lawsuit

You could be entitled to file a personal injury lawsuit against Novo Nordisk or another pharmaceutical company if you meet certain conditions. In general, you may be able to sue if you can prove all of the following:

  1. You were prescribed a GLP-1 agonist;
  2. You used your medication regularly and in accordance with your doctor’s instructions;
  3. You developed a serious medical condition while taking a weight loss drug;
  4. The weight loss drug was the direct cause of your injury or medical complication; and
  5. You sustained damages as a result of your injury.

If you have a strong claim, you could recover damages for your hospital bills, the costs of anticipated care, lost income from work, pain and suffering, and other verifiable losses. Furthermore, unlike many states, New York does not limit compensation in most personal injury claims. This means that you could receive as much money as you need to start building back.
