If you buy a new Tesla, you have every right to expect that all of its most important features have been thoroughly tested. Of course, when it comes to a machine as complex as a modern automobile, some mistakes are all but bound to happen. These mistakes can occur at almost any stage in the manufacturing process, from a vehicle’s initial design to its physical assembly. Companies cannot catch all of these mistakes, but they still have a legal duty to warn the public of defects that could prove dangerous if left unaddressed.
Autopilot has been implicated in thousands of consumer complaints and identified as a potential factor in hundreds of serious car accidents. In most cases, Tesla has sought to limit its own liability by pointing to its self-imposed restrictions on Autopilot. For example, drivers do not always have to keep their hands on the wheel to use Autopilot features, but they must remain attentive enough to retake control of the vehicle at a moment’s notice. Lawyers for Tesla, therefore, claim that most Autopilot-related accidents are not actually caused by defective software but by unprepared and inattentive drivers. Until recently, this strategy of offloading liability to car accident victims was very successful in court.

A recent series of court rulings and settlements could signal a change in Tesla’s legal fortunes, potentially making it easier than ever for Autopilot accident victims to obtain the compensation they need to begin rebuilding. Legal Results in Recent Autopilot Claims Against TeslaYou should not have to pay for an accident that was not your fault.
If you have been injured by a crash caused by Autopilot, you could be entitled to file a personal injury lawsuit against Tesla. However, filing a lawsuit is often much easier than winning one. Tesla has spent years and years fighting Autopilot lawsuits. In the not-so-distant past, Tesla had an incredibly convenient strategy to win almost every case. Its lawyers would tell the court that drivers are not supposed to use Autopilot unless they can safely regain control of the vehicle at a moment’s notice. If a driver does not have enough time to react, the argument goes, it is probably because they were distracted or otherwise negligent and therefore fully liable for the accident. For years, this deceptively simple strategy served as Tesla’s main shield against Autopilot injury claims.
However, courts are now starting to see through Tesla’s ruse.
Here is what you need to know about:
Tesla’s California SettlementTesla recently agreed to settle a wrongful death lawsuit involving a fatal crash in 2019.
The lawsuit describes the fatal accident that took the life of 15-year-old Jovani Maldonado, who was riding in a pick-up truck with his father when they were hit by a Tesla Model 3 traveling at more than 60 miles per hour. The driver of the Tesla was using Autopilot and did not try to slow down or brake until less than a second before impact.
The Maldonado family argued that an Autopilot defect caused the crash. Tesla, in turn, said that the sole responsibility for the accident lies with the driver.
The case was weeks from trial when Tesla abruptly announced that it had decided to settle. The terms of the agreement are confidential, and Tesla has yet to explain its logic, but the company’s decision appears to have been influenced by the outcome of a Florida lawsuit. In the Florida case, Tesla was ordered by a jury to pay more than $243 million to the family of a 22-year-old woman killed in another Autopilot-related accident.
Tesla tried to appeal the Florida jury’s $243 million verdict.
The lawsuit involves a fatal April 25, 2019, collision in Key Largo, Florida. A man in a Tesla Model S was driving through an intersection when he dropped his phone. Believing that Autopilot would keep him safe, he took his eyes off the road. Before he could find his phone, though, he struck another vehicle. The crash left a 22-year-old woman dead.
Tesla again tried to argue that car-makers cannot “insure the world against harms caused by reckless drivers.” In other words, Tesla wanted to place full blame for the accident on the driver. At the same time, Tesla also asked the court to dismiss the jury’s award of $200 million in punitive damages.
U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom ultimately rejected Tesla’s argument. In her February 2026 decision, Bloom found that the evidence presented at trial “more than supports” the family’s argument that Autopilot was at least partly to blame for the crash.
