An Overview of Accidents and Neck Injuries

Almost any type of accident could cause a serious neck injury. Some of the most common causes include the following:

Motor Vehicle Accidents

Cars affect the neck and spinal column in very different ways.

In many accidents, sudden changes in velocity, coming to a sudden stop after hitting another vehicle, or being thrust forward after being struck at a stop sign or traffic light, can subject the head and neck to extreme amounts of force.

Injuries vary, and could include fractures, traumatic brain injuries, or complex and possibly chronic conditions like whiplash.

Slip-And-Fall Accidents

Serious slip-and-fall accidents are associated with severe neck, head, and brain injuries.

The exact type of injury, as well as its location, can vary and is dependent on many different factors. If an accident victim falls hard and hits their head on a hard surface, they tear ligaments or muscles and sustain a concussion or other traumatic brain injury, too. In contrast, a fall onto the back or rear could injure the cervical column itself, leading to a slipped or herniated disk.

Other Types of Accidents

Other types of accidents can also cause serious neck injuries. Common types of accidents associated with neck injuries include:

  1. Nursing home accidents;
  2. Medical transportation accidents; and
  3. Patient drop and patient transfer accidents.
The 5 Most Common Types of Accident-Related Neck Injuries

The neck is a complex region that consists of interconnected nerves, bone, and tissue.

In an accident, almost any of these components could be damaged. However, the symptoms and long-term impact of an injury can vary with its location and severity.

Some of the most common accident-related neck injuries include the following:

1. Soft Tissue Damage

Soft tissue damage is an injury to the body’s muscles, ligaments, or tendons.

Different types of accidents can cause different types of soft tissue-related injuries, including, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Neck Strain: The neck is made up of more than 20 different muscles. They connect the base of the skull to the torso and help perform motions like chewing and moving the head. Strains occur when any one or more of these muscles are pulled outside their ordinary range of motion. Strains can cause symptoms that range from stiffness to deep, throbbing pain.
  2. Neck Sprain: The neck is supported by a series of ligaments that connect the bones of the spinal column to one another. Ligaments are strong, but they can be torn if the neck is bent or subjected to intense force. Tears to the ligaments of the neck are termed sprains. Like strains, they can cause pain but sometimes trigger less specific symptoms, like feelings of dizziness or general fatigue.

Neck strains and neck sprains typically improve on their own. However, recovery times vary. In some cases, strains and sprains can have long-lasting consequences.

2. Slipped and Herniated Disks

A herniated disk is an injury to any of the rubber-like disks that sit between the vertebral bones.

Each spinal disk has a soft center called a nucleus, which is encased within a tough, ring-shaped annulus. Spinal disks “slip,” or herniate, if the annulus tears enough for the nucleus to be displaced.

Common symptoms include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Arm or leg pain;
  2. Numbness and tingling; and
  3. Weakness.

Car crashes and other types of traumatic accidents can cause herniated disks if and when the force of the collision exerts too much pressure on the spinal column.

3. Neck Fractures

A neck fracture is any injury that cracks or breaks a neck bone.

Some cervical fractures are caused by long-term health conditions, like osteoporosis, but most neck fractures are inflicted through physical trauma, such as a sudden fall or a violent collision. Their symptoms could include any of the following:

  1. Neck pain;
  2. Difficulty maintaining balance;
  3. Difficulty thinking or speaking; and
  4. Limited movement, including possible paralysis.

Neck fractures typically trigger pain, but they are not always debilitating or disabling. However, if a fracture is very serious, it could cause paralysis.

4. Whiplash

Whiplash is a complex and poorly understood condition. It is caused by violent back-and-forth head movement and can affect different parts of the neck and spine, potentially damaging underlying bones, ligaments, muscles, and nerves.

The symptoms of whiplash range in severity. Some people who have whiplash do not experience any pain, whereas others may report recurring headaches or obvious neurological impairments.

In most cases, whiplash-related symptoms disappear within a matter of days or weeks.

However, whiplash can be a long-term condition and, unfortunately, difficult to treat.

5. Neck-Related Complications

Neck injuries sustained in car crashes and other traumatic accidents can prompt other injuries or increase an accident victim’s lifetime risk for certain complicating conditions. These could include any of the following:

  1. Nerve injuries;
  2. Bladder and bowel control-related problems;
  3. Impaired respiratory function;
  4. Chronic pain; and
  5. Depression, anxiety, and other mental health-related complications.
