Ozempic is a common prescription medication. Originally designed to treat type-2 diabetes, it experienced a surge in popularity after evidence showed it supports weight loss. According to some reports, more than 15 million American adults have taken Ozempic or a similar drug at some point in their lives.

In recent years, however, more and more people taking Ozempic have reported serious complications, including complications that doctors and drug-makers never warned them about. These complications vary in severity, ranging from vision loss to cancer, and not all have been definitively tied back to Ozempic. Nevertheless, a growing body of evidence indicates that Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications may not be as safe as we have been led to believe.

If you or a loved one has experienced complications or sustained a serious injury after taking Ozempic, you could be entitled to significant financial relief. A recognized U.S. News & World Report Best Law Firm, the Dietrich Law Firm P.C. has spent decades helping Buffalo families beat the odds, both in settlement negotiations and at trial. Since our founding in 2005, we have secured more than $300 million for our clients across the state, money they have used to pay down medical debt, seek superior care, and begin rebuilding in the wake of unexpected tragedy.

We could help you, too. Call Jed Dietrich, Esq., today at 716-839-3939 to speak to an Ozempic injury lawyer in Buffalo and schedule your 100% free, no-obligation consultation.

Understanding Ozempic

Ozempic is best described as a type of GLP-1 medication.

Ozempic, along with other drugs in the same class, works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. This hormone is released in the gut after eating. It can have several beneficial effects related to the regulation of:

  1. Hunger;
  2. Digestion; and
  3. Blood sugar levels.

Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications, like Victoza and Mounjaro, increase insulin secretion in response to meals. They can also lower levels of another glucagon, another hormone that raises blood sugar. Unlike insulin and other conventional diabetes treatments, Ozempic only lowers blood sugar levels when they get too high. This helps reduce the likelihood of developing hypoglycemia, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition.

Scientists have a reasonably clear-cut understanding of how GLP-1 drugs control diabetes. However, its effect on appetite is not quite as easily explained. According to The New York Times, medical experts generally agree that people who take Ozempic or its weight-loss-targeted counterpart, Wegovy, are not necessarily GLP-1-deficient. If anything, people with higher levels of body fat often produce plenty of GLP-1 without the assistance of any medication.

Randy Seeley, an obesity researcher at the University of Michigan, told the New York Times that people who take drugs like Ozempic or Wegovy typically end up receiving five times more GLP-1 than their body would produce in response to, say, a hearty Thanksgiving dinner.

Worryingly, Seeley said that the kind of GLP-1 production stimulated by weight-loss drugs is not limited to the gut. On the contrary, taking Ozempic or a similar drug can lead to higher-than-expected concentrations of GLP-1 in parts of the brain that doctors would not expect to find it. Nobody understands why this happens, or why it works with respect to weight loss, but that has not stopped drug manufacturers from trying to turn this unexpected health benefit into a massive commercial boon.

GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs and the Risk of Injury

Ozempic and other weight-loss drugs have come under increased scrutiny for their potential to cause serious complications and exacerbate existing conditions. Studies suggest that GLP-1 medications could cause any of the following:

  1. Abdominal distension;
  2. Gastroenteritis;
  3. Gastroparesis;
  4. Gallbladder disease;
  5. Intestinal blockages; and
  6. Decreased vision, or loss of vision.

Preliminary reports also indicate that Ozempic, Wegovy, and related drugs could accelerate hair loss. In some cases, patients have also reported psychiatric problems, including suicidal ideation.

Your Potential Compensation In a Weight Loss Drug Lawsuit

In New York, drug manufacturers have a binding legal responsibility to identify, document, and warn patients of potential medication-related side effects. If and when a company abrogates this responsibility, it could be held liable for the cost of any resulting injuries.

Depending on the circumstances and severity of your injury, you could be entitled to compensation for damages, including, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Your existing medical expenses;
  2. The cost of anticipated health care;
  3. Physical therapy or rehabilitation;
  4. Mental health counseling;
  5. Lost income from work;
  6. Diminished earning potential;
  7. Emotional pain and suffering; and
  8. Physical pain and suffering.

Under state law, damages in most personal injury lawsuits are not statutorily capped. This means that you could receive as much money as you need to begin rebuilding your life after being diagnosed with a serious medication-related condition.

These corporations know that a successful personal injury lawsuit, whether it is resolved through settlement or at trial, could open the floodgates for more claims.
