Zantac Cancer Risks

Warning sign In September 2019, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that Zantac and other generic versions of ranitidine were contaminated with NDMA. According to the FDA, NDMA has been classified as a probable human carcinogen, based on results from various laboratory assessments. A carcinogen is any substance that promotes carcinogenesis and has the potential to cause cancer in living organisms. The FDA requested drug manufacturers to perform their own testing for NDMA. Sanofi, the manufacturer of Zantac, decided to carry out a voluntary recall while the analysis continues.

Currently, evaluations of both the active ingredient (ranitidine) and the finished Zantac product are ongoing. Several findings indicate that instability with ranitidine under certain conditions could generate high levels of NDMA. For instance, Zantac, when exposed to high temperatures, similar to inside of a car on a hot summer afternoon, produced NDMA. Additionally, Valisure performed experiments with Zantac simulated by gastric fluid, at normal body temperature, and added sodium nitrite, which simulates diets with high amounts of common preservatives. The experiment also yielded high levels of NDMA. The nitrite, which is found in some vegetables, dairy and meat products, is a fundamental element in the creation of NDMA.

Cancer awareness ribbonsSince the 1980s, various research has shown a correlation between the contaminate NDMA, found in Zantac, and cancer. It has become increasingly apparent that Sanofi, the big pharmaceutical company responsible for manufacturing Zantac, concealed the Zantac cancer connection from millions of people who innocently took the medication to relieve symptoms of gastric and duodenal ulcers, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease, acid reflux and many other health issues. Zantac was not just taken by adults; it has also been prescribed to babies suffering from reflux.

Scientific experiments found that NDMA, the contaminant found in Zantac, could cause development of different cancer types such as: stomach cancer, kidney cancer, thyroid cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, testicular cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, uterine cancer, intestinal cancer, ovarian cancer, esophageal cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma.

It is important to contact your doctor for an evaluation immediately if you have been taking Zantac for an extended period of time and begin to experience any unusual symptoms. If you notice bloody stools, unintended weight loss, abdominal pain, fatigue or weakness, it is worth mentioning to your doctor.
